Complete isolation

Mathias Ott, Germany

During usual business operations, the logistics center in Zeulenroda dispatches roughly 5,000 packages containing 12,000 items every day. In order to remain fully operational and be able to continue delivering on time during the current coronavirus situation, Mathias Ott, the head of the department, decided to act fast: right after hearing about the rapid spread of the disease, he split his 50 employees into two shifts that work in complete isolation from each other. During our interview, he explained to us how that works in practice.

Two shifts that don’t cross any paths. How can we picture that?

All colleagues from the morning shift leave through the escape doors after disinfecting their equipment. And all colleagues from the late shift use the main entrance. This ensu-res that they really won’t come in contact with each other. All employees stick strictly to these measures to make sure we can continue to deliver our orders on time. That’s an amazing effort by the whole team!

Where do you eat if you no longer go to the cafeteria?

We order from our catering service Aramark every day. The kitchen staff then supplies us with pastries or steak sandwiches via a fridge, completely without contact. My employees are happy with that. But merely having pastries and sandwiches day in and day out can become a little monotonous. So I buy them doner kebabs every now and then.

Which additional safety precautions have you put in place?

There’s disinfectant available everywhere, and each employee wears gloves as well as a multifunctional bandana supplied by the Executive Board. For the past five weeks, we also haven’t had any contact with adjacent areas, such as production, the raw materials warehouse, the cafeteria or the mail lady. Any handover takes place via isolated trans-fer areas, as you can see in the photo. We communicate with other areas exclusively by email, phone or Webex.

So you’re quite well protected on the inside. What is your approach when it comes to your service providers?

We keep the prescribed minimum distance from the parcel service and shipping compa-ny drivers. The employees from our service providers GLS, FedEx and DHL collect the parcels without contact in the evening, as before, to deliver them during the following day. That can be difficult because some goods recipients are closed. Then we look for alternative solutions.

What alternatives are there?

We speak to our telephone service colleagues. They try to work out a solution with the customer, for example, to deliver the parcel to an alternative or private address.
